Year-End Projects

It started with movies. I started keeping track of every movie I watched (old, new, in theaters, at home, re-watch, etc.) on January 1, 2008.

In more recent years, I have taken my obsessive tracking and list-making and applied a creative lens as a means of reflection.

2018

Exercising has many obvious benefits: feeling healthier, losing weight, building muscle, stress relief, etc. It has also led to an unexpected benefit for me: seeing the sky change over time.

I'm an early bird and like to get my visit to the gym over with before I even start my day – usually by 5:45am during the week. After an about an hour, I leave and head home – walking to the trolley and end up looking east on Market Street – directly into the sunrise.

What caught my attention when I first started snapping pictures in January 2018 was the dark, complex, interesting gradient of the pre-dawn sky. Over the course of a few months, brighter pinks and blues started to appear. I thought it would be interesting to collage the sunrises together and enjoy the beautiful, bizarre, ugly, and interesting colors and composition.

2017

For 2017, I challenged myself to create a "Visual Diary" - weekly snapshots, illustrations, designs, or whatever I feel like that capture my life from that week. Sometimes they are specific events or things, sometimes they are overall feelings or an outlet for a burst of random creativity or frustration.

The only "requirements" were that the snapshot from each week features the week #/52 (ie. 14/52).

I posted updates each week and explained each entry here.

2016

Chris suggested late in 2015 that I challenge myself to read a book starting with every letter of the alphabet in 2016 (eliminating some small article words, like 'the' 'a' etc). I wanted to try some new authors, topics, points of views, and types of books in the process. I did not read the books in any order - just kind of started somewhere and found my way through the alphabet.

Some favorites/thoughts:

  • Favorite Overall Read: Intimacy Idiot by Isaac Oliver

  • Favorite Book Cover: The Girls by Emma Cline (or) Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Therese Anne Fowler

  • First Book Read: Room by Emma Donoghue

  • Last Book Read: Wolf in White Van by John Darnielle

  • Books read on Audible.com: 2

  • Books read on Kindle: 4

  • Books borrowed from the library: 18

  • Book most outside of my comfort zone / from a genre I don't usually read: Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel (Science Fiction / Fantasy)

2015

Admittedly, I am a habitual/obsessive list-maker and tracker of many things (ie. I have a list of every movie I’ve watched since 01/01/2008.) I finally decided that 2015 was the year to put some of that data and information to good use and design a document that displays four areas of my year: Travel, Books, Movies, and Restaurants. I also wanted an outlet to display some of the photography I accumulated over the year.

Below is a selection of the document, and the full document can be viewed here.
